Welcome & Introduction
Thrive in 6
Thrive in 6 is a six-week, evidence-informed wellbeing programme created specifically for Kingston and Richmond NHS staff working in high-pressure, emotionally demanding environments. Whether clinical or non-clinical, staff across the NHS give extraordinary amounts of energy to others, often at the expense of their own health. This course recognises the realities of shift work, long hours and unpredictable workloads, and offers practical, sustainable tools that fit into real working lives rather than adding further pressure. The programme takes a whole-person approach, integrating physical health, mental and emotional regulation, stress management, rest and recovery, and purpose-driven goal setting. Each week builds progressively, beginning with awareness and self-assessment, then layering realistic behaviour changes in movement, nutrition and sleep, before addressing stress resilience and long-term habit formation. By the end of the six weeks, you will have developed personalised strategies and a structured Wellbeing Maintenance Plan that supports both professional performance and personal health over the long term.
Building Foundations - Holistic wellbeing and goals that stick
Thrive in 6
The first week establishes the foundation for the programme by introducing the concept of holistic wellbeing. Together, we will explore how physical health, mental and emotional regulation, social connection, rest and recovery, environment and purpose all interact. Particular attention is given to the unique pressures faced within NHS roles and the common tendency to deprioritise personal wellbeing. Using a structured Wellbeing Wheel, you will identify your strongest and most depleted areas. The week also introduces the SMARTER goal framework, helping you translate vague intentions into realistic, measurable goals aligned with your values. By the end of the week, you will have set meaningful wellbeing goals and begun building awareness through gratitude practice and reflection.
Pause, reflect, grow
Thrive in 6
This week is dedicated to developing mindfulness as a practical skill for everyday NHS life. Mindfulness is introduced in clear, accessible terms as the ability to pay attention to the present moment without judgement. It is positioned not as something abstract or time-consuming, but as a trainable mental skill that can be used in real time during busy clinical and non-clinical work. We will explore how brief practices can calm the nervous system, reduce reactivity and improve clarity under pressure. Techniques such as box breathing, grounding exercises and short breathing spaces are practised in ways that fit naturally into work patterns, including mindful pauses before difficult conversations or between tasks. The focus is on building confidence in using short, repeatable tools that enhance emotional regulation and support sustained performance.
Fuel to flourish
Thrive in 6
In week three, attention turns to nutrition as a foundation for energy, concentration and emotional stability. You will learn how blood sugar balance, hydration and dietary patterns influence mood and cognitive performance. The course translates Eatwell principles into practical strategies that work within NHS constraints such as irregular breaks, night shifts and limited food availability. Rather than promoting perfection, the emphasis is on balance and gradual improvement. We will also reflect on your own eating patterns using a food and mood tracker and develop simple, budget-conscious strategies to sustain energy across demanding shifts.
Move to thrive
Thrive in 6
Week four focuses on movement as a powerful tool for mood regulation, resilience and long-term health. We will explore the evidence linking physical activity to reduced stress, improved sleep, enhanced cognitive function and lower risk of chronic disease. Emphasis is placed on the idea that all movement counts, including short bouts and incidental activity during shifts. NHS activity guidelines are explained in a realistic and flexible way, with encouragement to build movement into existing routines. The week supports you to design a work-friendly movement plan that accommodates fatigue and changing schedules, reinforcing consistency over intensity.
Balance the load
Thrive in 6
This week centres on stress awareness and resilience. You will learn to distinguish between acute stress and chronic overload, and to recognise early warning signs of burnout across physical, emotional and behavioural domains. The physiological stress response is explored to build understanding rather than self-criticism. Evidence-based stress management techniques are introduced, including physical activity, breathing practices, art, boundary setting, social support and self-compassion. The week encourages you to build a personalised stress toolkit and reinforces the importance of early help-seeking where needed, including signposting to occupational and NHS support services.
Rest to recharge
Thrive in 6
This week addresses sleep as a cornerstone of safe and sustainable performance. We will explore why sleep is essential for emotional regulation, immune function, memory and cardiovascular health, and consider the impact of chronic sleep deprivation on both personal wellbeing and patient safety. Sleep science is explained in accessible terms, including the role of deep and REM sleep and the disruption caused by shift work. Practical sleep hygiene strategies are introduced, alongside specific adaptations for night staff, such as strategic napping and light management. We will also design a personalised wind-down routine and begin tracking sleep patterns to identify achievable improvements.
